What is a Class A Asbestos Removal Licence?

A Class A Asbestos Removal Licence is the highest level of asbestos removal accreditation in Australia, allowing a licence holder to legally remove all types of asbestos.

A Class A Asbestos Removal Licence is the highest level of asbestos removal accreditation in Australia, allowing a licence holder to legally remove all types of asbestos, including friable asbestos. Friable asbestos is the most hazardous form—it can be crumbled or reduced to powder by hand pressure, making it more likely to release dangerous fibres into the air.

Only businesses or individuals with a Class A licence are authorised to remove:

  • Friable asbestos
  • Non-friable (bonded) asbestos
  • Asbestos-contaminated dust or debris (ACD)

In New South Wales (NSW), this licence is issued by SafeWork NSW, and strict safety protocols must be followed, including:

  • Use of enclosed areas and negative air pressure systems
  • Proper personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Compliance with asbestos control plans and clearance inspections

A Class A licence is essential for large-scale or high-risk asbestos removal work and requires thorough training, experience, and a demonstrated understanding of asbestos management. For smaller jobs involving only non-friable asbestos, a Class B licence may be sufficient.
