In Australia, asbestos removal work is regulated to protect workers and the public from exposure to dangerous asbestos fibres. The two main types of asbestos removal licences are Class A and Class B, and the key difference lies in what type of asbestos material can be removed.

Class A Asbestos Removal Licence (Highest level)

A Class A licence permits the removal of:
Friable asbestos – the most hazardous form, easily crumbled or reduced to powder by hand, releasing fibres into the air

  • Non-friable (bonded) asbestos
  • Asbestos-contaminated dust or debris (ACD) associated with both friable and non-friable asbestos

Required for:

  • Large-scale asbestos removal projects
  • Removal of sprayed insulation, pipe lagging, or loose-fill asbestos
  • High-risk work requiring airtight enclosures, air monitoring, and clearance inspections

Class B Asbestos Removal Licence (Limited scope)*

A Class B licence permits the removal of:

  • Non-friable (bonded) asbestos only
  • Asbestos-contaminated dust or debris (ACD) only if it is associated with non-friable asbestos

*Does NOT allow removal of friable asbestos

Required for:

  • Jobs involving asbestos cement sheeting (e.g. in fences, eaves, roofing)
  • Lower-risk removal work in homes, sheds, and small commercial properties

Both licences are issued by SafeWork NSW, and individuals must complete approved training and meet strict safety and compliance requirements.
